The Western Monogamous Norm
The Western lifestyle—a norm propelled across the globe first by colonization and later by media such as the internet—has normalized monogamy in the eyes of the public. Tales of “Prince Charming” and the love stories depicted in film have reinforced the belief that a man marries the woman of his life, and vice-versa.
In reality, regardless of the civilization, men and women eventually part ways with their spouses. As death is a certainty, couples and families worldwide can only bear witness to this with regret. Divorce can also interfere, and so on. No one is guaranteed to be united only to then die together; exceptions merely prove the rule.
Throughout history, man has been polygamous for various reasons. Patriarchy is, of course, the backbone of this practice; since society is entirely built upon it, it is only natural that cultural jurisprudence follows suit.
